This isn t Drew chatting with you today, but RACHEL! Welcome to the first of my weekly posts on the OD site.

After a short hiatus, I m back in action with Orange Drink, just in time to usher in a new decade full of great music and art and all the good things to be had in life. As usual, my involvement with the band has dared me to think on my feet and roll with the punches i.e. being booked for a non-existing show/creating our OWN show in response/me improvising on the sampler for the first time for an entire set (not to mention Drew surprising me with a new beat mid-performance). Hectic? Perhaps. But every musician enjoys a good challenge, and I m excited to keep collaborating, performing, and learning as much as I can. Oh, and having fun too!

A person who I think embodies this creative spirit in all ways possible is one of my perpetual fascinations David Byrne. I m currently bordering on obsession with him and his works, which has been a recurring phase for me for years now. I own 7 Byrne-related albums in a variety of media (vinyl, cassette, MP3) and recently purchased the films

Stop Making Sense

and True Stories

A renaissance man, a fun-lover, a social commentator, an inspiration! I just wanted to play music and record and perform on stage and have fun! I never wanted to be a website administrator. I don't even know what all this weird looking code has to do with our band, our artwork, or our music. I hung out with Farsheed last night and we had a long conversation about the relationship between musicians/artist identities and the internet. Does Orange Drink even need a website?

Well, I can tell you that if we didn't, less people would come to the shows, less people would listen to the music, less people would watch the videos, and there would practically be no way to purchase our CDs.

I'm thinking about trading in this website for a website template, where you use a website interface to change the design and update things, as opposed to the handwritten code. Hemlock Records is also thinking about using other companies website applications to assist with sales and digital file distribution. What is happening? Are we outsourcing ourselves and losing our identity? Or are we just taking advantage of free/low-cost solutions to help us compete in an industry where everyone expects to get music for $0.00.

A part of it is a little scary, to assimilate new technologies, but at the end of the day, if it can help reach whoever this music is meant for, I suppose it is all worth it. I only learned HTML (or rather, I haven't learned it, but have jerry-rigged this website) for the sake of helping Orange Drink reach the kids. It's all about the kids.

I'm not angry about it, maybe a little resentful, but probably more nervous and leery of technology. These ideas have come up from conversations from conversations with Zirafa and a great article from DJ Shadow. When we arrived at the venue, there were other groups of people who had come looking for the same show. The Orange Drink Team huddled in the friendly confines of Mr. Dragon (Zirafa's automobile) to assess the situation. Here were the known issues:

1: If the show wasn't happening here, where was it?
2: What about the Orange Drink fans who have yet to arrive?
3: Griselda wanted pop, and not that "fake stuff"

So, I left a note on the door with my phone number on it, for other patrons looking for the obviously non-existent show. We got a phone call from two of our friends who were looking for the show, and all we met up in the Pizza Hut parking lot.

We tried calling the event organizer to no avail and decided that if we didn't hear back in 10 minutes, we were going to go to the Hemlock House and blow the roof off, at least until the neighbors complained or called the police. After leaving two messages with the event organizer and then calling Jim to make sure it was okay to show up, we left for the Hemlock House.

After moving the recliner, the sofa, and the table, and then rolling up the carpet, bringing out the speakers and receiver and connecting them, and then opening the salsa, popping the popcorn, figuring out cubed versus crushed, and then setting up the tripod, camera, MiniDisc recorder, party lights, and then tracking down the misplaced sampler (my fault) and then figuring out that you can use a Playstation 1 power cord to power a BCF2000, we FINALLY got started!

The show was great! Everyone had fun: Rachel & Drew rocked the Dr. Sample and BCF2000 respectively, Zirafa killed it with live manipulation of a new track, popcorn was burnt, volume was cranked, the neighbors abided, Farsheed did laundry, Jim bled all over the floor, Fred threw up, we talked about how scary Silent Hill is, chips were eaten, the bottle of pop (real stuff) was depleted. And then after the show, Rachel got hit on at the train station, and Jim, Farsheed, & Griselda went to Golden Nugget for a 3AM breakfast.

I can't say it was what I expected but it was definitely one of most enjoyable and fun-filled shows we've played in quite a while.

Now you're probably going to wish future Orange Drink shows were moved at the last minute! Special token of gratitude to Jim & Hemlock House for the 11th hour accommodations.
